The International Diabetes Federation Welcomes the 6th Diabetes in Asia Conference
The mission of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) is to promote diabetes care, prevention and a cure worldwide with an estimate number of people with diabetes worldwide close to 200 million and projections indicating well over 300 million in 2005, the current diabetes epidemics is of great concern to those affected, their families and all the governments and social security systems.
This conference will contribute to a better understanding of the condition in two out of the seven IDF Regions, namely the East Mediterranean Middle East Region (EMME) and the South East Asia Region (SEA), and will contribute to identify solutions specific to these two Regions were the number of people affected is particularly high.

I am delighted to know that the 6th diabetes in Asia conference will be held in Cairo, march 2006
This conference, like the preceding conferences, will further consolidate the partnership between the SEA and the EMME regions of the IDF. The large number of people with diabetes living in these regions makes this conference a vitality important forum for elevating the profile of diabetes and improving the delivery of diabetes care.
Health care provision in our part of the world has to be tailored to the specific needs of our population, and this was our mission when we hosted the first Diabetes in Asia conference in Karachi, Pakistan in 1999. I am sure that Professor Morsi Arab and his team will carry forward this endeavor with great success.

As the chairman of the SEA of the IDF, it gives me great pleasure to note that the EMME region is hosting the 6th Diabetes in Asia Conference in Cairo. The effort to present the problems of Diabetes in the two regions to the rest of the world communities is of paramount importance as we together account for the highest prevalence rates of Diabetes in the world. The SEA region will give its unstinted support to make this meeting a great success with a view to prevent the rapid increase of Diabetes and its complications.
